The best time to visit Hnausapollur is during the summer, from late June to early September, when the highland roads are open, and the weather is more favorable. During this time, the lake’s vivid blue color is most striking, and the surrounding landscapes are lush and green. Visiting in the early morning or late afternoon can offer beautiful lighting for photography and a quieter experience.
Getting There
Hnausapollur is located along the Fjallabaksleið Nyðri road (F208), which is a highland road leading into the Landmannalaugar region. The road to the crater is rough and is only accessible by 4x4 vehicles during the summer months (June to September). In winter, the area is generally inaccessible as the roads are closed due to snow and harsh weather conditions.
