The best time to visit Landmannalaugar is in the summer when the roads are passable, and the weather is relatively mild. July and August are the most popular months, offering the best conditions for hiking and exploring. The area can be quite crowded during peak season, so visiting early in the day or later in the season can offer a more tranquil experience.
Getting There
Landmannalaugar is accessible during the summer months, typically from late June to early September, when the highland roads (F-roads) are open. The most common routes are the F208 and F225 roads, which require a 4x4 vehicle due to rough terrain and river crossings. There are also bus services from Reykjavik during the summer, making it easier for those without a 4x4 to visit.
Admission & Opening Hours
There is a visitor Center at Landmannalaugar which is open between 10 Am and 5 PM during the week. It is usually closed during the weekend.
Where to Stay
There are not many options to stay at in the Highlands. Landmannalaugar has a large campsite with basic facilities, including toilets and showers. It’s a popular option for hikers planning to explore the area over multiple days.
For those seeking more comfort, there are mountain huts available, but they must be booked well in advance, especially during peak season and it is also a very pricy option.
If you don't mind driving you can also do day tours from your accomodation near the Highlands. Whith this option you have more accomodations to choose from.
