1. The trail can be steep and rocky in places, so good footwear is a must.
2. Icelandic weather is unpredictable, even in summer, so bring layers to stay warm and dry.
Other Activities
One of the highlights of the hike is that you’ll pass another beautiful waterfall, Litlanesfoss, along the way. This smaller waterfall is surrounded by striking hexagonal basalt columns, which make for a fantastic photo op.
Location
Hengifoss, Egilsstaðir, Eastern Region 701, Iceland
Hengifoss is accessible year-round, but the best time to visit is during the summer months, from June to August, when the trail is clear of snow and the weather is more predictable. During these months, the surrounding landscape is lush and green, making the hike even more enjoyable. If you visit in the shoulder seasons (spring or fall), you’ll find fewer crowds, but the trail might be muddy or slippery.
Getting There
The hike to Hengifoss is an adventure in itself. The trailhead is located about a 30-minute drive from Egilsstaðir, and from there, it’s a moderately challenging hike of about 2.5 kilometers (1.5 miles) one way. The hike takes around 1-1.5 hours, depending on your pace and how often you stop to take in the views (which you’ll definitely want to do!).
